1.H2o. This may be the nearly convenient and obvious way to stick fondant to fondant.  BUT, it's my least favorite.  When working with fondant on fondant, if you're not very careful, h2o tin drip or run down the side of your block.  And allow me tell you.... water running down the side of a fondant block is not pretty!  It will plow into a mess in a hurry!  The water dissolves the fondant and y'all'll end up with stripes. If you utilise a modest brush and a very minimal corporeality of water, this tin work well for putting fondant on buttercream.  That's exactly what I did on this Toy Story Cake with the clouds and logo.  Merely exist sure to utilize only the tiniest castor of water.

two. Tylose "glue".  This is a method I used for ages, when I rememberd. The issue with making tylose glue is that it must exist made ahead of time. Have a tiny chip of tylose, mix it into water in a containter with a lid, and so let information technology sit over night.  It will be chunky and gloppy when you first mix information technology up, but past morning, it'll exist a articulate, gelatinous mucilage.  This actually works actually neat but waiting all night for information technology to congeal can be a problem for us decorators who are super besprinkle-brained don't always recollect that far alee. It would work perfectly for attaching lace medallions like on this Elegant Lace Wedding Cake.

Mayhap the easiest way to stick fondant to fondant... carbohydrate glue!

3. Sugar glue (or fondant gum).  For this type, you melt marshmallow fondant with a little h2o!   I learned this trick from CorrieCakes on Facebook years ago and it'south a perfect, piece of cake "glue" for all fondant decorations.  Information technology only takes seconds to make and if you decorate with mmf, you have everything you need on hand to brand this "gum".  Information technology's thicker than water, doesn't "run" easily and well… it's just a peachy solution!  Y'all tin get all the details for how to brand this sugar glue HERE (warning - old post with not-then-great photos).

4. Shortening. When I tin get away with information technology (when the decorations are flat), I rub the unabridged surface of my cake with shortening and employ fondant on fondant.  A good example of that is this Chevron Cake!  All of those stripes are adhered to the cake with shortening solitary and it works groovy!I as well employ shortening almost all of the fourth dimension at present to put letters on.  I can move them around without damaging anything if I discover that I've put a name on off-center or too high or low!  With the other types of glue mentioned, moving things around is not e'er possible!   I talk a little more than nearly using shortening for messages in this post on How to Use Tappit Letter Cutters (near the bottom - when I'm putting them on the block).

v. Diluted Corn Syrup.Corn syrup lonely is super sticky, so I sometimes dilute it with a flake of water to requite it a more mucilage-similar consistency. It works beautifully for sticking fondant to a cake lath.  I just water information technology down so information technology brushes on easily, and so "pigment" the surface of a block drum earlier covering it with matching fondant. That'due south what I did for the matching marbled fondant on the wedding cake seen hither.

using melted candy melts for how to stick fondant decorations to cake on balloons and tassels cake

I near forgot candy melts glue!

Updated to add #6: Melted Candy Melts. We'll call ths my "bonus" method.  Reasons I would not use melted candy melts are that they harden very quickly and can exist very clumpy (and so decorations won't always sit down apartment).

Simply if you need something heavy to be held on - melted candy melts hold very well.  I ofttimes utilize them to attach popscicle sticks or skewers to decorations that need to stand up (like numbers on cakes).

I also used them to attach the tassels to the summit edge of the Balloons & Tassels Block above and the tassels to the bottom of the balloons. The tassels were a niggling heavy for my usual "glue" solutions, so melted candy melts were the perfect solution!

My all-time tip to keep candy melts melted? Put them in a piping bag, melt them (10 seconds at a fourth dimension in the microwave), and then place the bag on a heating pad, fold it over on itself, and keep the bag there between uses!

At present you take half dozen different possible solutions for attaching fondant decorations to a cake.  My suggestion would exist to experiment with the unlike options and see which you lot're most comfortable with and/or which works all-time for You lot depending on your block state of affairs.

Do you accept whatsoever other methods or suggestions for sticking fondant decoratins on cakes?  Tell me in the comments!

Happy Caking!
